We were in town Friday night for a football game. The food and service were great , but the old man working the front counter was very rude. He told the couple in front of us it would be maybe a ten minute wait. When he got to me he looked down at my T shirt for our football team looked back at me and then told me it would be at least a thirty minute wait maybe more, and that I might should go somewhere else. We decided to wait since we were already there and it was worth the wait.
So I'm here in Northern Texas from South Carolina on FEMA business. Was about to walk across the parking lot and get a steak at Saltgrass. I then thought to myself, I need to look up an authentic old school TX steak joint. Through my searches, I discovered the "Ponder Steakhouse". When I realized it was only 20 miles away, I decided it was worth a try since I had nothing better to do. I arrived there and met a gentleman at the door who turned out to be the owner. We struck up a conversation and then next thing I know, I'm being offered up a "meat tour" to check out the steaks and the offering of picking one out myself. I chose a nice looking thick cut Porterhouse and asked for it to be medium rare. I also ordered the baked potato with butter, bacon, & cheese. When the meal arrived, i was not disappointed. The Porterhouse was cooked perfectly and the baked potato was delicious. I followed it all up with some Peach Cobbler.
Dear God!!!!! I'd give this place a zero if it was possible. The food was extremely bland... They said it says no spices on their menu... I looked it didn't say that. I kindly sent my steak back and ordered chicken strips immediately. It took ten minutes for them to send the EXACT steak I returned back as is (cut up with onions and mushrooms) with a side of butter and pepper in it and asked if I wanted it AGAIN. I told her no I wanted the chicken strips as I ordered ten minutes before. She left and never came back until I went to the front register 27 minutes after the original order of my chicken strips (when I sent the steak back), she saw me and started plating the chicken strips since they were sitting in the fryer basket for who knows how long. I told her everyone in my party was leaving (paying) and that i didn't want them. She said but we already made them for you... I reminded her that it was now half an hour later and that they should have cooked them when I first ordered them rather than working on butter to put on my original steak that I sent back and that it was too late. She said I would still have to pay for them. I told her I wasn't going to pay for food that I couldn't eat especially since I live in Springtown. She argued, talked to her manager and he took the food off. It was ridiculous. The service super sucked I mean it took about twenty minutes to get drinks another ten for bread that was clearly microwaved. Now I'm going home hungry at 7:40 in the evening... that food was supposed to be breakfast, lunch and dinner for me. If you took the time to read this then I suggest you stay far away from that place. Or just go to subway next door. Way better food at a cheaper price. Or if you're looking for steak go to saltgrass, hell cook steaks at home and I can put my life on it they'll definitely be way better I promise!
After reading many of the reviews and only seeing two 1 star reviews, I thought, they are just being unfair. Most of the reviews were 4 and 5 stars. My wife and I decided to eat there after our grandson’s football game. We arrived at 6:00 pm. After being seated, it took twenty minutes to get our drinks and place our order. My wife was disappointed they did not serve a filet. She ordered chicken strips. I ordered the T-Bone, medium rare with a salad. Another ten minutes and my salad arrived. After one hour, they served my wife’s order and told me my steak had been cooked wrong and they were cooking another. One hour and ten minutes after arriving, my steak came. On the positive side, I’m glad they recognized my steak was not prepared as ordered and corrected the problem without serving me a badly cooked steak. The second steak was a very good cut and properly prepared but tasteless. My wife was served three small chicken strips and a bowl of pinto beans. She ordered white beans. The owner and staff were very friendly. 1 1/2 hours after walking in, we paid and left. We were disappointed in our experience and will not be returning.
I do not regret going here and appreciate the personal touch by the owner and the excellent service of his staff. Now I am not going to say it was the best steak I ever had, as I tend to like my steaks "crusty" on the outside.... essentially Pittsburgh style. However, it was a damn good steak for being cooked on a flat metal top stove. The generous amount of "steak butter" was the perfect touch, as butter is my go to steak topper. Now I need to go back again someday and try their chicken fried steak that Bobby Flay featured on TV.
My 2nd visit to this stake house was just a good as the first. The stake is good and they make sure it is cooked the way you like it. The blue cheese is amazing. The service was great. The young girl was friendly as the owners.
